The Dangers of Exposed Affiliate Links to Your Business
The Dangers of Exposed Affiliate Links to Your Business
You Need to Adapt
Affiliate marketing is a great and profitable way to make money online, and by all indications it will continue to be that way for quite some time to come. Internet sales are still rising, and will continue to do so. Despite that fact, however, many internet marketers are finding it difficult to make money they way they used to. This is not because sales are down, but it may have a lot to do with the way products are being marketed.
Fear of Buying?
Part of the problem is that some buyers, for whatever reason, actually avoid buying affiliate products, or sometimes decide to buy them without giving the proper credit to the person who is doing the promotion. Sometimes people will be introduced to a product via an internet marketer, and then make the purchase through a link not associated with that marketer. Obviously this is not good for business, and can result in less profit for all your hard work.
Why So Scared?
So the question that needs to be addressed is whether exposed affiliate links have an impact on buyer's behavior in this regard. If you have ever shopped online, and who hasn't these days, has seen an affiliate link. They are pretty easy to recognize when you see one. They are usually long links, have a code in them corresponding to the marketer, and stand out like a sore thumb. They are not hard to spot!
Because they are so easily distinguished from so-called "standard" links, some potential customers, may actually be wary of the link, and become hesitant to make a purchase via that particular link. This is probably due to the fact that the "bottom feeders" I have written about before have tarnished affiliate marketing to a certain extent. It really only takes a few bad eggs to ruin the whole batch, and to a certain extent, that has happened in affiliate marketing.
Certainly this is not the case for all people, and many people still buy through affiliate links. If they didn't we would all be out of business! However, some people, upon deciding to buy the product, become an affiliate themselves and put their own affiliate id into the link you sent them! They then earn a commission by selling the product to themselves. Doing this is completely unfair, but it has the effect of buying the product at a discount, so you can understand why people do it.
To Cloak or Not to Cloak?
So, we once again must ask if buyers would behave this way if the affiliate link was not exposed, but instead was cloaked. The reality is, that when affiliate links are exposed, there will always be suspicion as to the validity or quality of the link in some people. Sadly, that is just a fact we need to deal with these days. So to avoid this problem, it may make sense to invest in a good 'link cloaking' program. This may not be the cure-all for the problem, (see my other articles on this topic), but it will help alleviate it in at least some of your potential customers.
