Built between 1853 and 1878, the St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York is the largest cathedral in the United States. Located in the skyscrapers of Midtown, right in the heart of Manhattan, situated on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 50th Street, just steps from Rockefeller Center and not far from Central Park. She is the principal church of the Archdiocese of New York and was built in the nineteenth century Gothic Revival on plans by architect James Renwick Jr.
March 6, 1810, land was purchased for 11 000 USD to build a Catholic school run by Jesuits. The project was finally abandoned and the site sold in 1813 at the Trappist abbot Dom Augustin Lestrange, exiled to America to escape persecution by French authorities. This account accommodate an orphanage for 33 children. With the fall of Napoleon in 1814, most of the Trappists returned to France, abandoning their fields. Others travel, travel to Canada, and they eventually built the Abbey of Saint-Joseph Spencer. The orphanage is maintained by the Diocese of New York during the nineteenth century
The Diocese of New York, founded in 1808 is converted to an archdiocese by Pope Pius IX in 1850. Archbishop John Joseph Hughes makes a decision to erect a new church to replace the old church of St. Patrick, located at the intersection of Prince Street, Mott and Mulberry Street. This church, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral, destroyed by fire in 1866, is also rebuilt and consecrated in 1868. Nowadays, it is the oldest Catholic church in New York.
The first Caen stone of the new cathedral was laid August 15, 1858 , right next to the orphanage in the Diocese, in an area north, away from most populated areas of New York at the time. The construction must stop because of the Civil War and resumed in 1865. The cathedral, completed in 1878, is dedicated May 25, 1879.
Between 1882 and 1884 buildings of the archdiocese are added, followed by tours of the west facade in 1888. In the eastern part of the building, a Lady Chapel, designed by Charles T. Matthews, completes the set in the early twentieth century. The windows of the Lady Chapel are designed and produced by Paul Vincent Woodroffe, between 1912 and 1930 in Chipping Camden, England. The cathedral was renovated between 1927 and 1931, major organs are located there and the choir was enlarged .
Its dimensions are 123 meters long and 84 meters wide and its highest point is 101 meters to each of two arrows flanking the west door. The building has neither buttresses or arrow to the crossing. It is the largest gothic Catholic cathedral in North America .
The St. Patrick's Cathedral welcomes each year about 5.5 million visitors and followers.

The windows were made by artists in Chartres, Birmingham and Boston. The rose window is a master-work people of Charles Connick. It measures eight meters in diameter .
The vault height is 34 meters .The altars St. Michael and St. Patrick were made by Tiffany & Co, that of St. Elizabeth is the practice of Paolo Medici of Rome.The Way of the Cross won an art prize at the Universal Exhibition of 1893 in Chicago.

A bust of John Paul II is located at the rear of the cathedral, commemorating his visit to New York in 1979.
Francis Spellman, then archbishop and later cardinal, undertook a major renovation of the development of the choir in the late 1930s and early 1940s. We owe him the bronze canopy located in the choir. Similarly, the altar and the old altar (retablo When carrying out the French sculptor Paul Marie Guibe) were replaced. The former high altar of St. Patrick is now heavily revised and shortcut in the chapel of Fordham University in the Bronx neighborhood of Rose Hill.

The organ can be played either from two consoles equipped with five keyboards each. They have a total of 177 records and over 9000 pipes.
