The Easiest And Least Expensive Ways To Update A Home's Interior
These days, if you live in an older home, everyone is always talking about how to update it
. Sometimes it seems like old homes shouldn't be allowed to look old anymore. Of course, a historical home is a little different than a moderately older home. If your home was built from the 1950's up until ten years ago, chances are it could use some updates. There are a number of inexpensive things you can do and accessories you can add that will give your home a more modern feel and look without busting your budget or involve any long term renovations.
Painting is the number one way to update. Where colors like pink and olive green were popular in the 1970's, the 1980's were full of peaches and country blues. The 1990's gave rise to more earth tone colors like beige and cream. Paint colors are always a matter of the taste of the homeowner, but if you are planning to resale your home in the near future and you are updating for that, more neutral tones are best because it allows the potential buyer to see more of a blank canvas.
Light fixtures are an easy way to add an updated look. Many light fixtures these days seem to be of a more simple design. If they are not too ornate, they will blend easier with different furniture styles and accessories. Keeping it simple is often the best way to go because it makes it easier to utilize a wider variety of things. With light fixtures, you can spend a little or a lot, the cost is up to you. Sometimes a simple and inexpensive light fixture will be just as attractive as something more expensive. You should always use a licensed electrician to change out anything electrical in your home.
Door knobs, cabinet hardware and light switch and electrical outlet covers are other items that are best kept in a simple style for the most part. Ornate cabinet handles, knobs and hinges that have a lot of swirls or embedded designs can mean you are limited in the different kitchen design that you can use. If cabinet hardware has a Victorian look or too many modern looking angles, then you will have to choose one or the other styles. Using something that is a simple line and solid color gives more versatility. Changing out malfunctioning doorknobs, light switch plates and outlet covers that are all scratched up or old looking can really perk up a new paint job even more.
These are simple things that you can do yourself for the most part for not a lot of money. You can paint one room at a time, change the ceiling light fixture, wall plates, outlet covers and door knobs and the room will look fresh and new. If the floor is not that attractive, try a few throw rugs or an area rug to spruce that up and perhaps update your window dressings too. You can do these things one room at a time as you can afford to and before you know it, your whole house will look like it has been brought into the twenty first century.
