The Emergency Room Is The Heart Of A Hospital

The emergency room can be called the heart of a hospital as it provides all those services that people think of when they first think of a hospital

. In fact, to many people, the emergency ward is the only contact they have with a hospital. It is when a person suddenly falls seriously ill that they are taken to the emergency ward or room.

People who get injured in a car accident are taken directly to the emergency room of a hospital. In fact, most of the people who reach this room are usually in critical condition where they require urgent medical attention. This is why the staff, nurses and physicians who work in an emergency ward receive special training to respond to emergency situations.

Open 24/7

The emergency ward of a hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week which means there is always someone here to offer immediate treatment to patients. Once the patients are stabilized, they are transferred to specific wards to receive further treatment. So a patient who suffers from, and is treated for a heart attack in the emergency room will be shifted to the cardiac treatment ward of the hospital once the condition is stabilized.

As the emergency room staff never actually knows what the next patients medical needs are, the ER should be equipped to meet all sorts of emergencies. They should be capable enough to quickly, thoroughly and accurately assess patients as there is no room for error here.

Make quick assessments

Patients who come to the ER with chest pain should be quickly ascertained by the medical staff to find out if the patient is suffering from a life-threatening heart attack or just indigestion. They should also be able to assess if the accident victim sprained his ankle or break his leg, and if another patient is suffering from a minor head bump or something more serious.

It is based on split second decisions that the staff should assess the situation and make the right decision. As there is no room for any error, the staff has to undergo high and rigorous medical training.

In fact, the reputation of a hospital depends wholly on the hospitals ability to treat their patients correctly, and see them recover quickly. This is why an efficient and well run emergency ward reflects an efficient and well run hospital. In other words, patients who receive quality care in the emergency ward can expect emergency medical treatment anywhere in the hospital.
