The Eternal Hookah: What's Old Is New Again
The hookah has offered enjoyment to those who seek a tasty and mellow smoking experience for centuries
. In 17th century Turkey, the hookah as we know it today was a central feature of coffee houses, cafes, and friendly gatherings of men and women who enjoyed the rituals and pleasures of sharing puffs of sweetened tobacco bubbled and cooled through water. Inviting a guest in one's home to indulge in the pleasures of the hookah, or narghile, was a sign of warm hospitality. It remains a common element in Middle Eastern cafes today.
Though the design of modern hookahs is little changed from those of past centuries, the tobacco used in them has evolved. The tobaccos of old were often combined with honey or molasses before being placed in the hookah bowl. Smoldering coals were applied to heat the tobacco to create the smoke to be drawn through the water in the pipe. Modern hookah tobacco, or shisha, is mixed with flavoring, glycerin, and sugar, offering a wide range of flavor choices for a savory hookah experience. Unlike cigarettes, shisha does not contain the many chemical additives commonly and legally added to cigarette tobacco. It is typically pure tobacco with only the flavorings, glycerin, and sweetening added.
Hookahs are available in a great variety of styles and prices, from $5,000 stunning works of art to $25 acrylic models. With shisha readily available and quite inexpensive as compared to other gourmet smokes, the hookah is an appealing alternative in tobacco enjoyment.
Hookahs are increasing in interest and enjoying explosive popularity with the opening of hookah cafes and bars throughout the United States. This trend offers an alternative to cigar bars for an intimate, relaxed, and friendly environment for customers and a tremendous opportunity for entrepreneurs. They are opening especially in and around college campuses, offering a social gathering place with a diverse clientele.
There are rules of etiquette to be honored when sharing a hookah and visiting a hookah cafe. Many do not allow the smoking of cigarettes due to local laws or the choice of management and guests. If cigarette smoking is allowed, it is never acceptable to light a cigarette from the charcoal heating the shisha. It is considered bad form to hand the hose to another and always bad manners to blow smoke in another's face. The proper etiquette when one is done smoking while the hookah is still in use, is to rest the hose on the table for another to pick up when ready.
The hookah is a classic example of "what was old is new again," with so many more discovering the pleasures of cool, sweet tobacco enjoyed in a relaxing environment of camaraderie and engagement.
