The Fall of the House of Usher
The Fall of the House of Usher is one of Edgar Ellen Poe's literal works. Just like the poem the Raven, the novel the Tell-Tale Heart, it also belongs to a Gothic story. Poe created an air of melancholiness and ghastliness by describing the scene that the narrator saw on horseback and the uncomfortable but inevitable feeling which haunted the narrator when he was on the way to the house of Usher at the very beginning of this story. Not only the dull, dark and soundless day, the oppressively hanging clouds, the dreary tract, the mere house, the vacant eye-like windows, the few rank sedges, but also the decayed trees have created a horrible atmosphere.
This is a thrilling story happened in the house of Usher. The Usher family is a family of a long history, which lay in the direct line of descent. Because of his family's tradition and effect, Roderick Usher, the hero of this story, knows well about rhyme and he is good at abstract-painting, reciting poems and playing guitar, but he is mentally ill. In my opinion, Usher's mental illness is partly caused by the family effect and inheritance, partly caused by the natural surroundings around him and the books he reads at his early age. However, the direct cause of his mental collapse is his sister's increasingly terrible illness and her abrupt death. Because Madeline is Usher's only relative in the world, he, undoubtedly will feel more lonely than before after being informed of the fact of his dying sister. What's more, Usher may have forecasted the horrible result after his sister's death. That is why Usher asked the narrator for help in order to lessen his anxiety and horror.
The whole story is told from the view of the narrator, who is a boon companion of Usher. Firstly, the narrator sees the melancholy natural environment surrounding the house of Usher in order to create the readers a horrible atmosphere and arouse the interest of the readers. Later, the narrator describes the background information about Usher and his family, and emphasizes his mental problem. During the process of living together with Usher, the narrator again talks about his mental illness and insane words and actions. At last, the narrator witnesses appearance of the ghost of Madeline, Usher's death and describes the fall of the house of Usher. The narrator does play a crucial role in this story. The story cannot be clearly told without the role of the narrator.
As for the theme of this story, I think it is horror because the writer tried every effort to create a horrible atmosphere from the beginning to the end. It is easily be apprehended by us readers.
