The Female Nude Part 2: Locations and Lighting

Locations are a key element and provide a context for the model. I prefer realistic and simple locations and have never used an exotic location for erotic nude photography, and I've find the following places to be perfectly suitable:

The home is a natural location for erotic nude photography for example the Victorian Boudoir photography shouts out intimacy. Consider the room space you have and what you will need, and make sure to remove any unnecessary clutter. Ideal spaces are the bedroom (or boudoir), bathroom, stairs, and the living room. Your choice will depend on suitability and the photo being created. Beware of distracting backgrounds (as this will save time editing them out later with Photoshop etc). Also sometimes I use a black background sheet that I hang from the picture frame rail on the wall to create a simple plain background. Consider using simple natural light either through the window or with either a single flash and reflector or bounce flash. Also as you will probably be limited by the available space, you must think clever with your lighting. Remember a lot can be achieved with one light and a reflector.

In the studio, the space is your own, small or large. It can be a white box, a black box and there will be many coloured backdrops or screens to choose from, and makes the possibilities endless. The lighting can be as simple or as complicated as you feel confident with. Whatever you are proposing to do, you must be prepared and familiar with the equipment beforehand. If it's a hire studio, find out about the lighting equipment you'll be using, as this will save you time on the day, and more importantly, you will appear to be in charge and very professional. You should not keep the model waiting too long as you prepare the set up.

Also most studios have a music system in place, so take along a few CD's or an iPod (check out first with the studio), to create a relaxing atmosphere for both the model and yourself to work in.

Outside locations provide many opportunities for expressing nudity and freedom. But be careful to find somewhere that is comfortable and private, and somewhere that the model is happy to work with you there. If you own a car, this will provide the model and you with security, privacy, a changing room and also mobility to the location. For lighting, a natural light with a fill-in maybe your best portable option. For atmospheric photos, try shooting early or late in the day when the sun is low and the contrasts and shadows are good. The midday sun can flatten many a good photo. I have used railway arches and open fields to very good effect.

Other locations: I once booked a hotel room for a nude photo shoot and at first, my model was unsure, given the location's connotations. But I made her feel secure in my professionalism and we had a very successful female nude shoot. For the lighting, I chose mobility, so I used a ring flash attached to the camera.

Make Up. Every model should be able to prepare her own make up to a certain standard, and you should discuss this with her before the day of the photo shoot. So think clever about the look you want from her. However, If you can afford a make up artist, then plan what you need in order to make the most of this created look'.
