The Four Principles Necessary To Discover Our Authentic Lives

Most of us spend our lives hoping for and searching for greater happiness

, love, and contentment. We imagine a future that could be far better if we can just take care of everything that needs to get done today. But if we go a step further and look at the way we are living today, some of the problems in this approach become clear.

The sad truth is that most of us spend far too much of our time worrying, planning, making excuses, and doing things all day which we hate for some imagined better future. We feel anxious and depressed. We feel alienated and isolated. We might, at times, know something isn't right and we might set out to find answers. But where do we go for these answers? Doctors seem to offer nothing more than prescriptions. Politicians offer only endless empty promises. It even seems like celebrities and rock stars are out of new ideas.

But why do we assume it is necessary to look externally for answers? In fact, the right answers for our lives come from within ourselves. When we succeed at looking internally for answers, when we incorporate this knowledge into our lives, then by definition we are living more authentic lives. It is this greater authenticity which makes us happier.

But how do we know how to find this authenticity? The fact is, certain conditions must be met before we can create a space in which we can hear that inner voice and find our own, unique happiness.

The 1st principle is that you live your dreams. You really need to focus, specifically, on the "being" and "doing" dreams, as opposed to "having" or "getting". The 2nd principle is that you question everything to advance awareness. This questioning includes all forms of authority, behavioral norms, and also your own behavior. the 3rd principle is that it is necessary to reject conformity every chance you get. To find meaning, as an individual, for your life is to reject conforming to others. The final principle is to discover more authentic relationships and seek more authentic experiences. Less TV and more walks down the street!
