The Frugal Guide to Social Media Building Your Business

The Frugal Guide to Social Media Building Your Business

Unless you have been hiding under a rock then you have heard about Facebook being used as an avenue to build your Network Marketing business. While there may be a little controversy in some camps as to whether it is an avenue that builds as quickly as other more traditional methods the fact still stands. I like to utilize Facebook to make new friends and connections! Business building is just a nice result.

First, let me explain "frugal".

Wikipedia defines frugality as "the practice of acquiring goods and services in a restrained manner, and resourcefully using already owned economic goods and services, to achieve a longer term goal."

My first exposure to the word was back in the '80s when a chef on the local PBS channel called himself the "Frugal Gourmet". His cooking theory was nothing was wasted, find a great deal on your food, and cook food that can be used in multiple ways (like a roasted chicken to serve dinner as the main course, and the left over chicken made into chicken salad the next day). Sort of the "waste not - want not" mentality.

So, being frugal includes the reduction of waste, controlling costly habits, being efficient, defying what may be the social norm of "keeping up with the Jones'" and staying well informed of current trends in order to be a better steward of your money. Frugal living is learning to cut expenses, getting the most out of your money and in the end, having more money due to your actions.

You can apply this mentality in various areas of your life. But for now, let's look at building our Network Marketing business with a frugal mindset using Social Media.

The prospect of Social Media to as one avenue to build a business interested me last year. I had been chasing down friends, family and bank tellers in order to present my opportunity. I had invested hundreds of dollars into buying leads. I felt fairly confident that I knew how to present my business. Yet, I was not seeing an increase in my distributor sign ups.

I also currently work 50 hours a week at a job where I'm pretty much at my desk all day long in the same office I've worked at for 10 years. I'm in management. So I can't really "prospect" with folks at work, and because I get home late from work I don't "get out" too much except for the weekends. I really needed a plan of ways I could connect and learn from folks on a daily basis but not be "out in the world".

I was exposed to a few great folks who know and teach about social media. I began reading and listening to their training. Here is a brief way I implemented what I learned.

Get a Game Plan

One of the hardest things working on a computer that is connected online is becoming sidetracked. You have your email up and see a mail ding in. You have a chat box opened up and someone chats you. You get a chat from a Facebook friend. It can become a challenge to stay focused. But if you don't stay focused you can end up wasting time for an hour (or MORE) and not have accomplished your goals on your game plan. And your lack of tracking totals will show it!

Facebook Friends

First, let's establish one ground rule. Farming, cooking, and raising animals on Facebook is not going to grow your business nor help you establish true connections with people. I was captured by that "cute" little trap a year ago. 6 months ago I realized I had the same 24 hours in a day that everyone else had. I had to start trimming time wasters out (for the here and now) that were keeping me from investing my time in my business.

So, I let the farm rot in the field. Facebook is now only used for valued connections to current friends and networking for new friends.

My Facebook plan is to spend 30 minutes on Facebook connecting by doing the following:

* 10 minutes checking in with current friends and posting or commenting value content to that friend. This is not a quick "HEY" but instead reading their posts or pictures and making true connecting comments. I can't possibly visit with every person every day. That is not my goal. The goal is to use the Social Media source as a place to network with friends.

* 20 minutes of looking at "friends of friends" who have commented and seeing if that person is someone I would like to connect with. I try to find 3 to 5 new friends five days a week. I simply send them a message with the invite that says "we have a common friend and I would love to connect with you!"

Track Your Actions

I was trained a long time ago in my Network Marketing business building that tracking your actions is a very crucial. There are several different tracking programs and ideas out there. You may already use one. If you don't - I urge you - START NOW!

Here is the simple plan that I used.

I list the bullets on the left and Monday - Friday across the top of my weekly tracking page. If I do the task I get 1 point. If I don't do it then I get no points. Each day I can earn 2 points (yes, I MUST invite / connect with 3 - 5 people as new friends in order to earn the 1 point!). SO, I can earn 10 points a week in Facebook Tracking Points. I use the tracking to analyze if my actions are giving me results.
