The Future Of Science
Science is an extremely important and growing field of study
. The world has progressed from torches and horses to nuclear power and spaceships thanks to science.
Many people are turned away from this study because of nightmares from high school physics and chemistry. Perhaps many of the most brilliant minds out there choose to employ their skills elsewhere because they view science to be boring.
Some of the biggest problems facing our world can only be solved through scientific experimentation and study. What would have happened if Newton and Edison had gotten bored with science?
Currently the world is concerned with energy and its sources, and what will happen if we do not find other cheaper and cleaner sources of energy. We are also constantly bombarded with global warming and other environmental problems.
Our future in many ways depends on whether future generations can find creative solutions to these problems. If these concerns are not fixed with science, then how?
We need to do a better job in our schools of helping or kids see science as interesting and fun. This may sound impossible, but in reality it's all about presentation.
Starting in elementary schools we need to show kids that it can be cool and fun to do experiments. There are many experiments that can be done inexpensively and with little or no preparation.
One experiment that will get a great reaction out of the kids is mixing ordinary sugar with concentrate sulfuric acid. You will want to do this in a beaker in a controlled and clean space.
When you stir the two ingredients together the sulfuric acid dehydrates the sugar. The combination quickly expands and leaves behind black carbon porous mass.
The reaction is quick and it will get an excited reaction out of the kids. This is a sure crowd-pleaser.
Another trick that will interest kids and even adults is one that is done in movies. Have you ever wondered how they are able to make it look like someone is getting cut without bleeding?
First cover where ever you want the cut to appear with potassium thiocyanate. In this case we will make the cut appear on the palm of your hand.
Next dip the murder weapon in a solution of ferric chloride. A pair of scissors will work well and are often at hand in a school setting.
When you drag the scissors across your palm the two chemicals will combine and form a blood red compound that creates the illusion that you are being cut.
A great way to excite the kids with this experiment is to get one of the students aside and explain to him or her the process of the experiment but do not tell the rest of the class.
Then choose this kid from the class and pretend like you are doing some other experiment, and act like you have accidentally cut them. Make sure that you do not have any children who would get upset by this.
After you have gotten a good reaction out of the class you can let them in on the trick and show them how it works. This is a great way to get the kids excited about science by showing them that you can play pranks with it.
An experiment that is also impressive is turning pennies into silver and gold with some special chemicals. Humanity has always been in search of a way to turn other things into precious metals and now you can.
The first thing that you need to do is add a pinch of zinc to a cup of water. Then add some sodium hydroxide, which can easily be found in Drano.
Now bring the water to a boil, you can do this on a Bunsen burner or a stove top. Once the water has begun boiling you can turn off the heat.
Then add several clean pennies to the solution and wait for them to turn silver. After they have turned silver remove them with some tongs.
The silver penny looks pretty cool but you can go even further and turn it into gold. To do this just hold one of the silver pennies over an open flame with tongs and it will turn the color of gold.
This is also an exciting experiment because you can give the pennies to the kids for a souvenir. This will add a little more draw to science.
These are just a few of the science experiments that you can do relatively easily. So go out and excite some kids about science and watch what kind of improvements they bring in the future.
