The Future Role Of The Us Armed Forces

The idea that we have of military warfare is a slug fest where two giant armies or

navies face off and slug it out until one of them has been whipped into submission. In the old war movies there was widespread carnage and the battlefield was littered with the smoking wreckage of burned out vehicles and tanks. It was a slugfest of the highest degree and whoever won would only have a few beat up pieces of equipment left at the end.

Since the day of the competing superpowers has gone the face of warfare has changed dramatically. The day of the dueling superpowers may return but as of now warfare is what we call asymmetrical or unorthodox. The threats that we are facing in the future are totally different from those of the past. We have to adapt to all of the changes which are incorporated on the modern battlefield. The super sized armies of yesterday are long gone with their high speed technology and missiles. They have been replaced largely by small ill equipped but determined fighters. They have to use unorthodox tactics because they just dont have the firepower to stand toe to toe with the larger armies.

Modern combat must incorporate all of the aspects of future warfare. The large army must be flexible enough to fight at one extreme or the other. They must be able to fight a turning war with guerilla forces and a traditional war with those few countries which are still able to field large armies. In order to do this we have to stretch and use muscles that we have never used before. We will have to develop our technology and become innovative in the way that we use it. There is one incident where a US Navy ship adapted its technology and was able to shoot an errant satellite before it crashed into the earth.

Modern warfare has to be more synchronized so that all of the technology that we have can be used in a synergistic manner. The best use of technology is exemplified by the way that we have synchronized our drones with the intelligence that we get on the ground in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Since we cant chase combatants into Pakistan we have used drones to offset their advantage. Since we cant cover all of the terrain that we need to be able to cover with drones we have dedicated our time and effort towards taking out the senior Taliban and al Qaeda members. This strategy has paid off in major dividends. We will have to continue to be innovative in our use of equipment and tactics

Modern warfare will have to integrate the additional dimensions of space, cyberspace, finance, tourism, transportation and logistics, and industrial sabotage just to name a few of the areas of consideration.

The modern warrior must be intelligent, flexible, and physically and mentally tough if he is to win because he and his equipment can be quickly thrust into a wide variety of situations.

We must develop a generation of super soldiers to go along with the super new technology which we will employ in future operations. Military Ring Express
