The Habit of Exercise
Did you know that 50 percent of people that start exercise will stop within eight weeks
? In order to prevent this from happening it is best to know what to expect when you start a new program. Here are some things to keep in mind when start a new program:
1) You will be uncomfortable at first. There are many types of discomfort, and the one that is associated with beginning a new program is normally one of pain, especially if you have neglected you body for a long period of time. This pain maybe enough to make you want to quit, don't! Despite what you hear on bad commercials on TV exercise is a serious commitment. You cannot get fit by working out five-minutes a day sitting on a couch watching TV. You must exert real effort and experience some discomfort.
2) Learn to pace yourself. On your very first day to the gym don't try to do ever machine in the building. This will lead to major pain and possible injury. You will also kill your enthusiasm and flame out fast. In order to keep you coming back, pace yourself and build on small successes each day.
3) Workout with friends or join a group. Someone that has the same interest can push you to new heights, or at the very lest get your butt out of bed and go for a walk when you don't want to. If you make a date to meet-up with a friend or a group the odds are great improved that you will show up than if you try to do it by yourself.
If you don't have any friends that you can workout with, take the initiative to find a workout buddy or join a group that fits your interest. There are many groups and people with your interest that you can find easily over the Internet.
4) Mix it up. If you do the same thing over, and over, and over again you will eventually become bored. But if you change your workout every couple of months, or even everyday, this excuse will disappear. There are many things that you can mix up; experimenting with different weight equipment, trying new stretches, and changing the intensity of your cardio program.
5) Find the right equipment. Buying the right equipment in the beginning can be a bit costly, but don't be cheap. It will pay off in the long term. When you do go shopping for whatever supplies you need be sure to go to a specialty store where the sales people are fitness enthusiasts themselves. Finding the right equipment and paying for it will payoff in the long-term.
When you know what to expect in the beginning, you are more likely to stick with it. When you stick with something long enough it will eventually become a habit and these guidelines will help you do just that.
