The Hangover Of Remorse
As Ive made mention of before, the internet is a thing of wonder
. For work, social interaction and even shopping, much of the world now takes place online. However, the main thing its good for is wasting time. As a procrastination tool, the web simply excels. All those amusing articles, bucket lists and captioned photographs of kittens come from somewhere; someone made those things, then put them up online for all the world to see. One could trawl for hours looking for brief flashes of amusement, and indeed this one frequently does, whether that was the intended course of action for the day or not.
Does all this nonsense have a purpose? No. Does it tell us something about our society? I think, yes. For example, one of the many humour sites out there is called Texts from last night and as the name suggests this is simply a collection of user-submitted text messages from or relating to the previous evening. The site itself was created from two former Michigan State University students, the delightfully alliterative Ben Bator and Lauren Leto, in February 2009. Since then the site has been featured in numerous blogs, posts, thousands of times on social networking and published a book of collected text-based mirth. An app is also available on most operating systems. Drunken friends to share them with are not included. As you might imagine, a lot of the messages stem from drink-related misadventure, some relate to sex or dating (more often than not, both) and a few of them are blissfully surreal. For example;
Okay so for future reference and your own safety I should probably tell you that it is not cranberry juice in that bottle on the kitchen table.
The problem is drunk me is completely unaware how poor I am
I hate it when the guy who runs the chicken and waffles truck is convinced that I run a cult.
Please rescue me. But take your time, Im getting pizza
So this weeks question is thus: whereas previously, drunken misadventures, poorly-thought-out couplings and run-ins with members of the constabulary were shared only between close friends and acquaintances, now theyre proudly pasted onto the interwaves for all to view. And yes, I think I did just make that word up. Feel free to use it elsewhere.
When I was younger, I think the idea of drunken communications I had with someone being made public for all to see would have left me mortified. In truth I suspect it still would, but I can now display a level of self-control which results in not drunkenly phoning or texting someone in the first place. But, as with so many other things, the way to deal with something thats potentially damaging or upsetting in some way is to laugh it off. Make a joke out of it, rub the egg off your face and carry on. Its the same thought process that always results in dark humour or sick jokes relating to historical or current events. This concept in itself gave rise to the question Too soon? At what point does it become acceptable to joke about something that on the surface at least- is not intrinsically funny?
For lesser acts of stupidity such as those in our texts however, its certainly preferable to laugh about it straight away, even when it hurts to do so because of the hangover. Then start crafting an apology
