The Hardest Part Of Quitting Cigarettes May Suprise You

When tobacco smokers get so sick of being chained to a pack of cigarettes

, they can become really desperate to find a way to quit. They have been known to latch onto anything that sounds like a promising way to quit even if it sounds ridiculous. They have tried things like hypnosis and expensive therapy sessions. They go to camps or rehabilitation centers. They buy pills, patches, gum, and inhalers. Every once in a while a smoker is able to use one of these methods to finally kick the habit, but the rate of quitting and staying quit after using them is relatively low.

What many smokers that want to quit do not realize is that their tobacco addiction is only partly physical. The other part of a smoking addiction is purely emotional. Their body craves the nicotine of course, because it is an addictive substance, but studies show that the nicotine can be out of your system in a relatively short period of time, days in fact. It is the emotional addiction to the smoking habit itself is what is so darn hard to get over.

When someone has been smoking for years and perhaps not even that long, they have become accustomed to buying cigarettes, holding a cigarette, lighting a cigarette, and of course, smoking cigarette. They have programmed themselves to associate smoking a cigarette with many of their daily activities and they automatically reach for one at these times. They know exactly when they are going to want a smoke and will be prepared to have it before the time even comes. In the morning they will have them close at hand. In their car they will have them close at hand. After meals they will want one almost immediately. Talking on the phone is a perfect time to smoke. Taking breaks at work is usually the only opportunity to smoke there.

It is self programming. It is so hard to break all of these habits. It is a constant battle from the beginning of their day until they go to bed at night. Twenty times or more during the day they can have an overwhelming need to smoke a cigarette. This is what usually defeats the smoker when they want to quit. It really does not matter what method you use to try and quit, if you do not have the willpower it takes to overcome all of this temptation hour after hour, day after day until you can break the chain of smoking repetition, you will likely fail. This is why so many smokers use the step down method. It is a less painful way to stop smoking, but you have to be persistent and you have to be committed to it. It is possible to quit cold turkey, but success rates are not very good. Cutting back your cigarettes a few at a time and retraining yourself to not smoke a little at a time might be the best way to get your life back.
