The History Of Barbecue Sauce

Barbecue sauce is a flavored liquid sauce also known as a condiment that ranges from

watery to thick in consistency and is intended to be used as an accompaniment to barbecued dishes. Although it can be applied to pretty much any food, it is usually used to top off meat after cooking, grilling or baking.

Traditionally speaking, it has been a much favored style of sauce for pork, beef ribs and chicken entrees. It is not used very often for dipping items such as French fries or pizzas.

Bbq sauce recipes come in many different varieties from sweet and sour, spicy, smoky, and tangy. The ingredients vary but most commonly used ones are tomato paste, vinegar, spices and sweeteners. These differences in ingredients and how they are combined is based on the region and tradition that they are from.

To give a precise answer on the origin of bbq sauce is somewhat unclear. Some historians believe that it can be traced back to about the tale end of the 15th century when Christopher Columbus brought over a sack of bbq sauce from Hispaniola, while others think that it originated within the first American colonies from back in the 17th century.


Many references to barbecue sauce have been found in English and French literature over the two hundred year period.

The South Carolina mustard sauce, a unique type of bbq sauce invented by the Germans in the southern state, was popularized in the 18th century.

Many of the earlier cookbooks did not include barbecue sauce recipes. The original commercialized bbq sauce was created by Louis Maull in 1923, but the very first nationally produced barbecue sauce did not show up until 1951.

A lot of restaurants began to create specialized barbecue sauce recipes from region to region in the United States. Each region religiously created their unique and traditional styles of bbq sauce. For instance, vinegar and mustard based sauces are very well known and loved in certain southern regions of America, while in Asian countries a ketchup and corn syrup based sauce is very popular.

A more spicy bbq sauce can be found in many restaurants within the Texas region where chili powder, Tabasco sauce, bell peppers, Onions and meat drippings make up for a more Tex- Mex blend, influenced by the Mexican culture.

Barbecue sauce styles have been influenced by many different cultures, particularly within the southern states, so the next time you are thinking of making a barbecue sauce recipe, try getting a little experimental and trying out a few different styles of sauce.
