The History Of Canadian Bingo

While it may not be as well known as other bingo histories

, Canadian bingo has a very rich history. Over the years it has shown a great affinity for the game and this is one of the reasons why it is so popular in Canada.

When the English arrived in the 17th century they brought bingo with them. The game was very popular and so to pass away the time in the new territory, they played it. It was only a matter of time until the local picked it up. Interesting enough, the areas of Canada which have an English influence play a different style of bingo to those parts of Canada with a French influence.

In the 20th century, Canada came into its own. Canada committed troops to the Allied cause for World War One and Canadian troops made the most of life on the front by playing the game at every opportunity. Doing so, gave them a sense of normalcy and brought a bit of sanity into their life while it was being turned upside down every other way. The people back home showed their support for the troops by playing a game which had a war theme.

Bingo played the same role a generation later for World War Two. Canadian troops figured prominently in such skirmishes as the Battle of the Atlantic, the Dieppe Raid and the Battle of Normandy. Like Australia and New Zealand, the Big Three overlooked the contributions of these minor allied powers. Following the end of the war, a commemorative version of the game was released as a tribute to the fallen heroes. It was a best-seller.

Post-war, the game experienced somewhat of a lull. This changed followed the election of Pierre Trudeau and his marriage to Margaret Trudeau. She was a fan of the game and played it at 24 Sussex Drive with visitors. These visitors included the likes of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Helmut Kohl, Harold Wilson, Ed Heath, Charles de Gaulle, Georges Pompidou and Francois Mitterrand.

Because of this the game had a renaissance. Now it was hip and cool. It joined the likes of Twister as a game that was both for children and adults. The 1970s were a very good time for the game. It became incredibly popular and was present at all levels of society.

This resulted in the creation of a Canadian championship which was good for the game. It gave players something to aspire for. It became broiled in politics when players from Quebec won at the same time that Quebec's status was such a hot topic. Suffice to say that it was a very tumultuous time for Canadian bingo.

With the advent of online bingo, Canadian players have also embraced this form of the game. There are not many places in the world which have participation as high as Canada's. There are sites that are nation-wide and players from all over the country and then there are sites which are specific to each of the 10 provinces. The game is going from strength to strength and is assured of a good future.
