The History Of Network Marketing-from Small Beginnings
Network marketing began more than seventy years ago
. While it may seem to be a new methodology, in fact nothing is further from the truth. It had very humble beginnings, with a company that offered sales in just a single state to begin with.
A company doing business under the name of California Vitamins found that they could make infinitely more sales when they had a very broad based group of representatives selling for them. They determined that the typical marketing method was not for them, and set about creating a new one.
Most of the people who were part of the customer base were family and friends of the representatives that were currently selling their products. They turned satisfied customers into sales representatives, who then recruited their own salespeople as well. Each was rewarded by a percentage of the products that they sold and the sales people that they recruited. That marketing methodology worked so well that they determined to broaden their customer base still further and offer sales to other states and areas. The company later changed their name, becoming Nutrilite Food Supplement Corporation, a company which just 2 years ago sold a landmark 3 billion dollars a year in supplements.
About 1960, Amway came into play. Founded by Richard Devos and Jay Van Andel, Amway began their marketing with the model that had been used by the California Vitamins company. They were a resounding success at what they did and network marketing had taken a very firm foothold in the world.
Network marketing styles continued to change and grow over the course of the 70s and the 1980s in the United States as well as abroad. It is only in the recent 15 to 20 years that network marketing, as we know it has really come of age. Today it is creating millionaires nearly as rapidly as the dot com industry did during the heyday. Today more and more companies are taking advantage of this trend in networking and are selling products directly to consumers by virtue of network marketers rather than in physical stores.
Network marketing is one of the fastest growing trends in the world today, driven along by new entrepreneurs who are innovating new methods of marketing and driving the concepts forward in myriad different ways. The predictions are that network marketing will continue to grow and to change, becoming one of the most common methods of marketing and buying goods in the United States.
The network marketing methods of yesterday, much as any other kind of technology, are growing and changing. They are being fed by new means of communication and new kinds of online technology, allowing them to grow still further and to create new opportunities for network marketers.
While the history of network marketing shows some very humble beginnings, the future of the industry, fueled by new entrepreneurs and new technology, appears particularly bright.
