The History Of The Beer Can

Distribution of beer using cans is a concept that's new as compared to distribution of beer inside bottles which has existed since the 16th centurion

. By 1909, a German immigrant, Leopold Schmidt, coming from Montana approached the American can company (ACCO) to experiment by distributing canned beer. Earlier tries failed since the cans were made of material that could not withstand the pressure of the beer. They burst. Cans which are affordable and do not affect the beers taste had to be invented. In 1919, prohibition hit America; sale of beer was banned for thirteen years and trials of inventing the can stopped. During prohibition, the ACCO continued experimenting with the beer cans idea, and later in 1925 Charles Stollberg, an ACCO inventor succeeded in filing the first patent for an actual beer can. On April 19th 1927, the patent was granted and larger breweries grew more interest in cans. In 1929 the ACCO began testing patents. This was by the request of both Pabst and Anheuser-Busch. A tar type lining was used in the earlier trials. It was used to avoid the metallic taste from being felt in the beer. The cans were ready for distribution but larger companies did not want this idea. Gottfried Krueger, a small brewery, made almost 2000 cans of beer by September 1933 in New Jersey. They were sent to 500 families in a town having a survey. ACCO promised to cater for the trial costs. The trial was 91 percent successful. Early cans had flat tops and had to be opened by a special key that was made to be sold by the cans. Cream Ale and Krueger's Finest beer reached the market in Richmond, Virginia in January 1935. Krueger sales shot up by 550 percent by march that year. Pabst, Americas largest brewery followed the trend and by July 1935 it had widely distributed beer cans. This trend was liked by many companies and by the end of 1935, over 20 breweries offered canned beer. The ACCO got a competitor -the continental can company- who was the pioneering company to manufacture a cone top can. It was loved by smaller breweries and by the time 1935 came to an end, the Continental company signed a dozen breweries. Brits got their first canned beer in 1935 when cone top cans were first sold by Felinfoel and Tennents. Many beer cans were made in 1936 and the biggest change in the design of the beer can was changing it bottom from flat to concave. In 1937, the J spout can was invented by the Crown, Cork and seal. In 1938 6 pack can beers emerged. Crown, Cork and seal replaced the j spout with a new Crowntrainer design in 1940. Breweries are not allowed to use cans they have due to war in 1942 since the army needed medals. 35 companies are allowed to use olive drab cans to brew beer for the army. Use of beer cans resumed in 1947 and the first aluminium can emerged in 1958 in Hawaii. A year late,7 ounce all aluminium cans emerged, then in 1963 pull tab cans emerged. Its earlier version caused many injuries since it had sharp edges. Ring tops which emerged in 1965 were used to correct this. Stay on tab beer cans emerge in 1975.
