The History Of The Hen Night And The Stag Night

The hen night and the stag night have long been a tradition just before the day of the wedding

. The hen night is for the bride and her friends and the stag night being for the groom and his mates. Both of these traditions have been there for decades in one form or the other and have a history behind them.

The hen night, which is also called the bachelorette party, is the part that is held for the bride to be. In the UK, Australia and Ireland, the term used is hen party while that used in the US is bachelorette party.

Yet, whatever evidence that could be gathered suggested that it initially came about in the fifth century in Sparta, where the military officials and the commanders celebrated, feasted and toasted to one another prior to wedding ceremonies of their friends. It was then that he bid farewell to his last days of bachelorhood and most importantly, he would promise to continue allegiance to his official friends.

It has been a tradition for centuries to give a party to the bride to be before the wedding day. However, it was started as a proper celebration in the 1960s when the sexual revolution took place. The main principle on which a bachelor party was based was that of gender equality, as men had the stag night and the women the hen night.
