The Interesting And Informative Age Of Education.

Gone were the days, where one would just go to a library

, sit for hours in silence, look into a lot of books and note down in an elegant manner about the information required. But nowadays, it is information through channels or TV shows.

I remember once during my college days, where during my second term, I had to write a thesis about the Evolution of Human Race. You would not believe how devastated I was when my professor gave me this topic. He said, Mark, it is an interesting topic and I have full confidence that you can present a paper on this topic. He also said, Since you are a skillful writer, you could write for a minimum of 30 pages." 30 Pages! Would you believe it? I was taken aback and felt my professor was joking. While leaving the classroom, I asked whether he was joking about the thesis to be in 30 pages. He gave an ugly stare and even now when I recollect, it gives a chill feeling to my spine.

Soon after I left the class, I went straight ahead to the college library. Gosh! I didn't know there were a lot of books. I scanned through various topics kept on the racks and saw one about the Origin of Species by Charles Robert Darwin. Man! It took me one week just to finish reading the book and I thought how I was able to finish a 500 pages book in a week. I started writing and submitted a 35 pages thesis on the Evolution on Human Race. You should have looked at the evil smile my professor had when I submitted the thesis. I felt somehow he must have had a personal grudge against me. Anyway I was happy when he awarded me an A+ for the topic. In the end, it was worth the efforts and pain I had to go through.

My daughter recently had a topic for her schools annual project, where she had to present a report on the predatory instincts of African lions. Like a caring father, I volunteered to take my daughter to the nearby library, but she refused. She said she would rather watch the pay-per-view show about the African lions on the Discovery Channel. The whole day she was glued to the TV watching the Discovery Channel on my Time Warner Cable connection. With the high definition video and the surround audio, the experience was very immersive; the occasional lion's roar made me jolt on the couch and I felt like there was a lion in the room. The next day my daughter showed me her paper. She got an A+ and her teacher especially commented on her excellent presentation in giving a detailed description of the topic.

I was very proud of my daughter and was happy for her. Writing came naturally for her I assumed, but there was one thing that surprised me. It was good that she did not refer any book for this project and managed to get an A+, but I was thinking was she missing out something. Everybody hates to take notes from a book these days, probably a sign of improvement in technology. Watching great educational programs on TV has become very popular and it's quite innovative and fast. What took weeks to learn in the olden days can be learned in under an hour. No wonder kids are getting smarter and smarter and it would not be too long for them to surpass the limitations of conventional medium of education.
