The Issue of Socializing Homeschooled Children
The Issue of Socializing Homeschooled Children
The factor of socialization is very important with homeschooling children. There are arguments on both sides of this debate and how children are impacted by being educated at home. Children educated at home will obviously receive less interaction than their public school age peers. Parents will counter this argument by saying there is more of a positive difference in the quality of interaction. It can also be said that for those children taught at home there will be more of a richer and varied experience. A few factors of this depend on the structure of the child's home curriculum and the location of the home.
Home schooled children must be exposed to regular opportunities for socializing, as compared to kids who go to school, the everyday chances for this are more limited. Public schools usually contain a broad cross section of students from backgrounds of all kinds. A student at an American school will most likely be surrounded by other students representing dozens of cultures, nationalities, languages, etc. It can be helpful to talk, play and learn with new kids, as this forces children to learn how to get along in groups and with unfamiliar people.
There is a difference between interacting with siblings and complete strangers. Children can learn a lot by interacting with completely new people from diverse backgrounds. When we talk about schools socializing children, we have to remember that this is often a negative rather than beneficial experience. Institutionalized education can leave students with many scars by the time they're done with it. The damage to a child's self esteem and well being that such an experience inflicts can take years to overcome. The idea that being in a conventional school is crucial for children's emotional health is a widespread myth that falls apart when we look at the reality. The greatest benefit of homeschooling is it allows a child to fully blossom in a safe environment. This encourages them to grow up in a manner that fosters their sense of self worth.
If children don't feel free to communicate openly, it's hard for them to be socialized in a positive way. Compare the typical high school experience to the relaxed atmosphere at home. Between peer pressure, bullies and teachers of questionable competence, schools are seldom the ideal places for kids to express themselves. That is a universal experience in the US, and it serves to condition the student to withhold from discourse and debate. Rather than encourage learning and self expression, this type of environment does the opposite. Kids who are home schooled and encouraged to express their ideas are much more likely to end up with a real interest in the subjects they study. Children know that their parents will be supportive and not overbearing. A parent can also take control of the environment and not let one sibling bully or make fun of another.
Every day we live we are engaging in some type of socialization activity. You will almost always interact with others as you go about the daily details of life. So there are always additional chances for your children to hone their social skills. Even simple things like taking them with you go about running errands or grocery shopping all provide meaningful experiences.
