The Jewelry Of Richard Chavez From San Felipe

A man was born in the state of New Mexico who has brought happiness to many all over the world

. He may not be the most well-known of artists in the world, but Richard Chavez, a silversmith from San Felipe Pueblo, near the Rio Grande in New Mexico, creates such wonderful and eye catching pieces of work that the respect he receives from his fans worldwide is totally deserved.

Richard Chavez began his career in architecture, having graduated from the University of New Mexico and serving as a draftsman to Harvey S. Hoshour, who himself came to Albuquerque having worked under Mies Van de Rohe, a renowned German architect. However, after a time experimenting with his parents' silversmith tools and with the help and guidance of his grandfather, Richard Chavez started to get into creating silver works of art which culminated in him quitting architecture and devoting his life to silversmith jewelry art. At first, in the mid 1970s he entered his work in competitions, but around 1990 decided to let the public, and his growing number of customers and fans, to be the judges of his irregular but wonderful pieces of work.

A lot of the teaching from his grandfather came in the art of creating Heishi and turquoise decorative necklaces. His philosophy in his designs was minimalist, and had its roots in the architecture in which he had been involved. The necklace jewelry ended up taking more of a back seat as he explored the manipulation of silver, aiming to use balance, purity and not too much detail at every opportunity. Many believe that the popularity of Richard's work is due to this unfussy or discreet use of colours and shapes and it is true he never goes overboard in the size or shapes of his stones, nor does he use too-bright colours.

Each of the many steps in the process that his jewellery pieces go through is done by the artist himself, from purchasing the stones to polishing the finished products. However, he no longer works out of San Felipe Pueblo, although his roots will always remain there. It is without doubt that Richard Chavez jewellery pieces will continue to sell well for years to come and attract admirers and the attention of collectors from all over the globe from the Americas to Australia. We can only hope that the day he stops working his magic is far into the future.
