Located at Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, Juilliard School is one of the performing arts conservatories in New York City of United States. Many people name it as "Juilliard" only and it gives training to around 800 undergraduates as well as graduate students in different streams of fine arts like drama, music, and dance.

Low Acceptance Rates

Juilliard School is considered to be the most prestigious performing arts conservatories across the globe. That is why many aspirants desire to pursue the fine arts promotion there but the acceptance rates are pretty low. While the applications every year come in the range of 2,000-2,200 annually, the acceptance rate ranges from 7.50% to 8% only.


Brief History

Founded in 1905 and named as Institute of Musical Arts, Juilliard was formed with the background that till that time United States had no premier music schools. In results most of the aspirants were running to different parts of Europe for the purpose. Juilliard Foundation was created when the institute moved on to the Claremont Avenue in 1910. Merger with Institute of Musical Arts in 1926 and finally the combined schools were named as Juilliard School of Music in the year 1946. First winner of Pulitzer Prize for music, William Schuman was the president of the school at that time.

Recent Successes

Pronounced aims and objectives of the institute were to create awareness on the dynamism of music and related materials to students. Awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1999, the school has performed successfully in China in 2008 as a part of the Beijing Olympiad.

Manuscript Collection in Juilliard

Donated by collector and financier Bruce Kovner, Juilliard became richer by a host of highly precious music manuscripts in the year2006. Invaluable autograph scores, composer proofs, and sketches were all received in the process including great creations by Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Ravel, Copland, Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, and Stravinsky. One of the best steps taken by Juilliard is that the entire collection has been digitized and can be viewed online.

Preparatory System

Juilliard has a Pre-College division imparting training to elementary, junior high, as well as high school students. Held on every Saturday from September through May every year at the Juilliard building at Lincoln Center, the program is for enabling the students to study playing primary instruments and getting acquainted with music theories.

Viewing performances of eminent artists is a bonus for the students in Juilliard school.
