The Key Features Of Intel Latest Embedded Atom Processor Code Name Tunnel Creek

In Intel Developer Forum Beijing April 2010, Intel announced that there is a new

Intel embedded Atom processor going to launch at the end of this year, the product code name is "Tunnel Creek" a system on chip like solution that has better performance, lower power consumption, smaller in size and better flexibility in connecting to other silicon.

High Level Architectural Key Features and Differences:

1. A system on chip solution where it can boot up by itself from SPI flash interface.

2. Integrated memory controller interface that support DDR2 32-bit memory interface.

3. Integrated display interface for LVDS and SDVO.

4. Integrated high definition audio interface.

5. There are no longer north bridge concept, all integrated into the SoC. Hence faster interface between processor and memory core.

Graphics and Video Architectural Key Features and Differences:

1. Integrated faster graphics processing engine core.

2. Added new hardware video encoding engine that can encode 720p resolution video with many video codecs.

3. Better overlay and 3D processing engine.

I/O Bus Architectural Key Features and Differences:

1. First ever Intel processor architecture that adopts PCI Express 1.0 interface an open standard interface to connect to any third party silicons. Total 4 PCI Express by 1 link in this SoC, each can transfer 2.5Gbps of information.

2. It maintain some legacy interface like LPC, SPI, GPIO, I2C, and others.

Key performance differentiation as compare to Intel(R) Atom(TM) Z5xx Processor families are:

1. Higher performance per watt as integrated front side bus into the silicon, apply 32-bit bus width for memory interface with increased memory transfer rate to 800MT per second.

2. Increased graphic core frequency to 400MHz which is 2 times faster than previous generation.
