Taking advantage of educational opportunities is a smart way to be successful

. President Obama is a good example, and he has shown his commitment to helping others. One major part of the effort is to make available to students more free money for college.

For decades, college prices have steadily increased. Schools don't offer scholarships to ever student to cover necessary expenses. With high costs looming, many young adults can't afford to go to a university. Working, single mothers are particularly hit hard. Helping single mothers get an education helps their families and future employers. The President has attempted to help by encouraging more grants for single mothers to attend school. There is no difference between Federal Pell Grants and Obama grants. The name "Obama grants" came as a result of the President's emphasis on educating moms. Currently students can earn about $5,350 through a Pell grant. This is over $1,000 above the previous maximum, and it's a big help to moms who want to return to school. Tuition, books, travel and school supplies are all expenses that students can cover with grant money.

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is also a very valuable program. With this tax program, the first $4,000 of community college or university expenses are free. This $4,000 write off can be a big help to many students. Single moms often fall into this group, so these programs are particularly beneficial to them. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Taking away a little of the financial burden of college is a helpful way to get more students enrolled.

The President has demonstrated that he considers this issue a priority. With the recent passage of the economic stimulus plan, a lot of college loans will be offered by the government. There is more government emphasis on properly preparing students for their future at all levels of education. There is also emphasis on encouraging more students to consider community college. Community colleges are more than a stepping stone on the way to a university. They are valuable institutions.

In a 2007 speech called Reclaiming the American Dream, the President said that making college education more available is "the best investment we can make in our future." With the measures he has taken to this point, the President has demonstrated he means his words. Even though Obama's grants for moms get much attention they are certainly not the only important opportunity being offered. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
