Taking advantage of educational opportunities is a smart way to be successful

. Since running for office in 2008, President Barack Obama has made education a priority issue for his administration. Free money through grants and scholarships is only the beginning. For decades, college prices have steadily increased. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. Many young adults choose to forgo college because of the cost. One group that is particularly hit hard is single mothers. More education helps single mothers achieve on their jobs and take care of their families. More scholarships for single moms is one way to improve the situation. If you've heard of Obama grants for moms, know that people are referring to Federal Pell Grants. Currently students can earn about $5,350 through a Pell grant. The primary goal is to encourage single moms to return to school, and by 2012 they could receive as much as $5,400. Tuition, books, travel and school supplies are all expenses that students can cover with grant money. Single moms should also consider the American Opportunity Tax Credit. This tax credit makes a way for students to write off the first $4,000 of their education costs. This is a worthy incentive, especially for schools that are less expensive. Since many single working mothers have low incomes, these programs are a major help. Students have numerous school options: full-time or part-time, 2-year or 4-year college, multiple majors. Now the expenses are just a little lighter, and eager mothers can enroll in school. Increasing educational opportunity and performance is undoubtedly one of the President's goals. The stimulus plan that passed has some provisions to make the college loan process easier. The administration is also focusing on improving the performance of schools at all levels. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. Community colleges are more than a stepping stone on the way to a university. They are valuable institutions. In a 2007 speech called Reclaiming the American Dream, the President said that making college education more available is "the best investment we can make in our future." The President's actions are reflecting his words. Grants for moms are just a small but vital part of the education mission. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
