The Lonavala Hill Station

Lonavala, a popular getaway on the Sahyadri hills is situated at an altitude of 622 meters above sea level in the state of Maharashtra

. It attracts a large number of tourists mainly from the neighboring places like Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Baroda, etc. The months from May to October are the best due to pleasant weather conditions. The hill station was discovered by Sir Elphinstone, the Governor of Bombay Presidency, during the British rule of 1871.

Lonavala derived its name from the Sanskrit word Lonavali meaning caves. This is because the place has many caves like Bhaja caves, Bedsa caves, and Karla caves. Bhaja caves are believed to be many centuries old and were built by Buddhist monks. Images of archaeological importance are engraved on the cave walls. There is also a waterfall at the end of the cave.

Karla Caves, also believed to be built by Buddhist monks, is the largest cave temple in India. The magnificent architecture of the caves throws light on the rich Buddhist heritage around 100 A.D. It inscriptions on the walls signify that the caves were used by monks to meditate for indefinite periods.

The place is also known for the number of historical forts used during the Maratha dynasty such as Kalegad Fort, Lohagad Fort, Tikona Fort, and Tung Fort. Today, these forts act as viewpoints for admiring the splendid landscape of the place from great heights. Besides, a number of lakes within the hill station adds to its beauty and provides boating opportunity to people.

Lonavala is an ideal getaway suiting the vacation needs of all types of tourists. It is a common honeymoon location for couples. It also offers trekking and hiking activities for adventurers. Its spellbound beauty touches the soul of nature admirers.
