The sun city' of India and one of the main attractions of Rajasthan, Jodhpur's story goes back as far as the 15th century where, as the story goes, the Head of the Raiput clan founded the kingdom Rathore. Funded by spices and opium the kingdom soon flourished and was popularly known as Marwar' or the Land of the Death. The city had also been an important stop-over for tradersover the centuries.

The Jaswant Thada can easily be identified by the fancy domes of creamy white marble. Built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II in 1899, there were monumental additions to the original structure contributing an interesting crematorium and other monuments.
