Vitamin B12 is not the only B vitamin as there is also vitamin B1

, B2, and B6 (folic acid). These B vitamins can work in tandem with each other especially B12 and folic acid. Cyancobalamin is the scientific name for B12 and it is unique as this vitamin also contains cobalt which is a mineral

Vitamin B12 plays a number of vital roles in maintaining the health of the body. One of the key benefits associated with B12 is the production of energy to enable the human body to move and function. Vitamin B12 is helps to develop our red blood cells. These cells are responsible for carrying oxygen around the body. Many times you may have heard of people who are feeling tired or fatigued receiving vitamin B12 shots or injections.

Vitamin B12 also plays a vital role in the functioning and health of the bodies central nervous system. It helps to maintain the myelin sheath which is a protective coat that protects the nerve fiber's from being exposed. This protective covering enables the nerve fibres to transmit signals to and from the brain. Optimum functioning of our brain and memory can also be improved with vitamin B12. There have been a number of medical studies that have claimed that people suffering for neurological conditions that include dementia and Alzheimer Disease have low levels of vitamin B12 in their bodies. Low levels or a deficiencies in vitamin B12 have also been associated with depression.

One of the advantages of vitamin B12 is that it can be sourced from the food we eat. It can be found in many animal products like red meat, poultry, oily fish and shell fish. Vitamin B12 is also abundant in dairy products that contain eggs and milk. Although, B12 is abundant in many of the foods we eat there are still many people who are deficient in vitamin B12.There are certain groups that are more prone than others. Higher risk groups include people who are over 60 or those who eat a vegetarian or vegan diet.

The elderly are more at risk due to their inability to absorb B12 effectively. When eating foods rich in B12 the body needs to break down the nutrients in the bodies digestive system However, as the body ages it becomes less and less good at this process. Pernicious anemia is a common condition that affects the digestive system and is also linked to a deficiency in vitamin B12. This particular type of anemia inhibits the body in producing a protein called the intrinsic factor. This protein is needed to absorb vitamin B12 effectively Many doctors do not recommend B12 tablets because they need to be absorbed in the stomach. A better alternative to boost their B12 levels is to use injections.

People who eat a vegan or vegetarian diet are also at risk of having low levels of B12. This is due to their diet because B12 is not found in abundance in vegetables. If your feeling tired and you think you might be deficient in B12 then consult with your doctor about taking supplements.
