The Meaning Of Your Business Life

Does business life need meaning? I think it does

. I also think that the need for such meaning comes naturally to certain people, and comes as a shock to others. Although its possible to define any number of categories concerning people in business, I came to the conclusion recently that in this context Ive seen three types:

The first group is the dreamers, where I mean dreamers in the sense of people who have the vision of how things could or should be, compared to how they are now. They may be dreaming their dreams, but theyre wide awake to the possibilities and the opportunities. I often see people like this in leadership roles, where they attract followers and define a new pace and a new direction for their organization. In short, a new meaning for their business life.

The second group is the doers. The doers know what the meaning is of their business life, and theyre engaged in making the meaning become reality. Doers may also double as dreamers, in the same way as leaders often double as managers, both doing the right things and doing things right. But whether they figured it out for themselves or whether they approved the meaning that someone else figured out on their behalf, theyre also typically wide awake and making it happen

The final group is the drifters. Whereas the first two groups are awake, members of this group are typically asleep. Asleep on their feet, asleep with their eyes open, asleep as they go through the motions. Some of them may stay asleep like that for the whole of their business lives.

So dreamers and doers are naturally inclined towards meaning. What about the drifters? What, for example, if someone wakes them up or if they wake up by themselves? What happens if they wake up 20, 30 or 40 years into their business life to the notion that they need a meaning to their business life? Thats rude awakening if there ever was one.

Luckily I think that its possible to stay out of the drifters group (if that is your choice) by asking yourself regularly and frequently about the meaning of your business life. Not only will you have a chance of avoiding the business zombie trap above, but youll also be able to look back over years of a business life and to know where they went and how you spent them, which I find is a much more appetizing prospect than waking up 20 years down the line and having nothing to show for it.
