The Missing Link in Our School - Wood Shop

I was shocked when they removed Wood Shop from the curriculum

. As a student, I remember carving wooden blocks into my name or a best friends name. I remember building my so called dream home at 12 years old. My house had three bedrooms, a large play area, and one bathroom. I even remember making a wooden mom and dad... It was adorable and meaningful. It was fun and not only was I able to tap into my creative side but I also was able to connect math to the real world. Some of my friends were extremely creative and use to make their own chess game, wooden animals, large buildings, etc.

In Wood Shop, we actually used tools like carpenters. They were all hand powered of course for our safety. We sawed, hammered, drilled, used screws and bolts. We also sanded the wood. In math, the teacher tells you how to problem solve. However, in Wood Shop, you learn how to problem solve by doing. You are organizing and putting things together yourself. During my time in this class, I learned the importance of construction and building strong sturdy homes. I was extremely proud of my self because I was brought up with the notion that only men can build and put things together. Till this day, I piece things together by myself instead of relying on my husband. There are many projects you can do at home with your kids so they can get hands on experience and relate math to the real world. You will be surprised to find that many kids don't have a clue how to use a ruler or a yard stick.
