Currently, there are ten phlebotomy certification organizations in the USA. Some of these agencies include the American Certification Agency, the American Medical Technologists, and the National Center for Competency Testing, the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the National Phlebotomy Association. Each certifying body has it's own requirements for phlebotomy certification.
For example, The American Certification Agency for Healthcare Professionals offers two phlebotomy certification options; phlebotomist Techs, and phlebotomist instructors. You must meet certain criteria to be eligible to take the phlebotomy certification exam. For this particular organization, you must have completed 100 hours of clinic work, performed 100 venipunctures, and 10 dermal punctures. There are two distinct components of the certification examination-the written component, and the practical component. Phlebotomy instructor applicants must be phlebotomy certified or a registered RN or LPN. Written tests are not needed; but applicants must provide 3 years of blood drawing experience in addition to 1 year of teaching experience.
The American Medical Technologists (AMT) offers phlebotomist certification. Those applying must have successfully passed a phlebotomist program that meets standards set out by the USDE, as well as 120 hours of teaching & clinical work. Alternatively, 1040 hours of work in the phlebotomy field over the last 3 years will suffice. In each case, the applicant must have accomplished a minimum of 50 successful venipunctures and 25 successful skin punctures. A phlebotomy handbook, reference manuals and practice tests are available through AMT.
NCCT also offers both phlebotomy certification and donor phlebotomy certification. Phlebotomy applicants must be graduates of an approved phlebotomy program or possess one year of experience. The NCCT also requires a phlebotomy performance form. In California and Louisiana, additional forms must be submitted. The requirements of donor phlebotomist certifications are slightly different than traditional phlebotomist certification. In order to qualify for this exam, you must possess 6 months donor experience and eighty successful donor collections.
