The Most Important Things to Keep in Mind for Your Interview

The Most Important Things to Keep in Mind for Your Interview

Congatulations on obtaining that first interview. The next step in making a good impression on the hiring manager is to be well prepared for the interview.

First, take the time to research the company. Learn about the length of time that they have been in business, whether or not they are publicly or privately held. Try to find the company's mission statement. This will tell you whether or not it is a company that is a good fit for you.

Secondly, make sure you have a copy of the job description with you. This will help you formulate questions about the position as you go along with the interview. Ask the interviewer if it is alright to take notes. This show that you are actively listening and interested in the company, the interviewer, and what the position requires.

Thirdly, have a list of questions ready for the interview. The worst possible response to a hiring manager when they ask if you have any questions for them, is the word, NO. You should be able to use some of the questions that I have listed in the Best Questions to Ask in an Interview section.

Next, make sure you close the sale...because what you are doing during an interview is selling yourself and your qualifications to the hiring manager for a given employment position. Give a summary to the hiring manager of how your qualifications fit the need for the position he/she has available. When summarizing, be brief and concise. Then simply ask them... What is the next step in the hiring process? Will I be your candidate for this position?

Thank them for their time and let them know that this position is very much something that you want, making sure to get their business card or number so that you can follow up with them. Following up after an interview is extremely important and will be discussed in another area.
