Fabrics like leather, corduroy, cotton and denim are widely being used in the US and Canada to make something similar to the Scottish garment for men. Experiments are being done with its pleading, stitching, draping and many times the only similarity left with the original garment is that it a skirt like garment for men.

They have been greatly popularised in the gothic subculture as an alternative to the traditional pants, jeans, shorts etc. Men have been shown wearing such garments in many popular movies and TV series like Brave heart and Tin Man.
