The New Business Rules: Making The Shift From Employee To Entrepreneur
Have you ever played a board game with kids?
It can be one of the funniest, yet frustrating experiences.
They beg you to play with them and bate you into playing by taking out all of your favorite, classic games...Candy Land, Monopoly, Chutes and Ladders.
You take a seat and remember the fun times.
As you pick your card and are about to make your move, your 5 year-old opponent says...
You cant do that.
"Sure, I can" you say...I remember the rules.
Then it all comes flooding back.
Kids like to change the rules of the game. Not only do they like to change the rules at the beginning of the game, they like to change them during the game too.
And the change is always in their favor.
Then you think..How in the world do I beat this little punk when hes constantly changing the rules?
Well, its kind of like that when moving from the role of employee to employer.
The business rules all change.
And you may not even know it.
How in the world do you move forward when the business rules that you are so comfortable with have all changed.
The reality is, becoming a successful entrepreneur requires a huge shift in mindset.
As employees, the business rules are simple: do what you are told.
A lot of times creativity and ingenuity is frowned upon...heaven forbid that you should inspire others to think outside of the box.
And its so easy to get comfortable. You show up, you do a task, and you get paid.(And not always that well.)
Then the day arrives when we decide to be bold, take action, break all the business rules and take charge of our destiny.
We are ready to call our own shots.
Yet, our habits, philosophies and old business rules are still ingrained in our belief systems.
Growing up, in school, we are basically groomed to go off and work for someone else. We don't learn the skills of how to be a leader, we learn how to be employees.
And making the transition can be difficult, especially if you are not aware that a transition needs to be made...or that the business rules have changed.
Let's face it, no on really tells you the rules have changed.
One of the first shifts in mindset that you have to make is the willingness to think BIG!
The most successful people have big ideas and have no problems telling the world about their big plans and stretching way outside of their comfort zone. The employee mindset tends to be small...opting to stick with what they know rather than try something new.
Big thinkers also play the game to win...Big! So the shift there is to get comfortable taking swift action.
And finally, successful entrepreneurs are not afraid to spend money. They make decisions based on how much they stand to profit, not by how much something costs.
Knowing that the rules of the game change when moving from employee to employer a key to success. Learning the new business rules quickly will help in achieving your goals.
