The New Nutrition Standards of the Diets for Old People
As a special group, the health of the elderly people are always concerned a lot by us
. In particular, we should pay great attention to their daily diets. Not long ago, the Nutrition Expert Group of the World Health Organization proposed the new nutrition standards of the diets for the elderly people. In the following passage, we will introduce these new standards in details.
First, fat
Fat should account for 15% of the total diet for old people, including 0 to 10% of saturated fatty acids, and 3% to 7% of unsaturated fatty acids. The representative foods are mainly rice bran oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, rapeseed oil and so on. However, for the elderly, the fat intake should not be too much, otherwise, it is unhealthy to their body.
Second, protein
Protein should take up 10% to 15% of the total calories of the diets. The remaining 85% to 90% of the calories is provided by fat and carbohydrates, in which the compound carbohydrates should account for 50% to 70%. They are mainly contained in the foods such as millet, corn and green beans.
Third, trace elements
Trace elements are also very important for elderly people, especially
zinc, which is essential to their health. The old people should appropriately eat more foods which contain plenty of zinc. These foods include the sardines, carrots, beef, peanuts, walnuts, almonds, brown rice and so on.
Fourth, free sugar
Free sugar mainly refers to the sugar purified from sugar beet and sugar cane. It does not include the sugar which is naturally contained in the fruits, vegetables and milk. The total amount of the intake of free sugar should be limited, with 10% of the total weight of the food.
Fifth, dietary fiber
Elderly people should take in 16 to 24 grams of dietary fiber every day. Foods such as sesame, toon, beans, bamboo shoots, carrots and seaweed all contain high content of dietary fiber, so you can eat more of these foods properly.
Sixth, salt
For the old people, the maximum daily intake of salt is 6 grams, without the minimum limitation.
Seventh, food cholesterol
The maximum daily intake of food cholesterol for the elderly people is 300 mg, without the minimum limitation.
The nutrition experts believe that, as long as the elderly people can follow the above new nutrition standards, and make reasonable arrangementsfor their diets, they can achieve the purposes of health and longevity.
