Once in a while a mobile handset comes along that is truly exciting. It is fair to say that the iPhone 4 is such a beast. Every element of this phone is pleasing, and Apple have taken the unusual step of looking closely at their competitors, and produced a phone that eclipses all of them in the specification stakes.

Lets take a look at the screen on the iPhone 4 for example. It would have been easy to up the resolution slightly since the Apple name does indeed sell itself. Rather than take this approach, a stunning new display has been incorporated which every other brand would love to fit in their handsets. Named the "Retina" display due to it reportedly being able to display a higher quality of image than the human eye can actually see, the screen shows an incredible 960 x 640 resolution, which when you break it down equates to a superb 326 pixels per square inch. To the user, this is an unprecendented level of clarity on such a device, and is more akin to the printed page rather than a mobile display. For owners used to the great quality 10" screen of the iPad, to help put things into perspective it may be a surprise to hear that the 3.5" iPhone 4 has 78% of its big brothers pixels. The glass screen on the unit is especially durable thanks to a chemical treating process that improves it scratch resistant qualities to such a level that it is actually 30 times stronger than plastic. So impressive is this glass that Apple chose to fit a sheet on the rear of the chassis too, giving a stylish yet more uniformed look than on previous models.

FaceTime is a feature that the manufacturers have been making much noise about on the iPhone 4. We can expect this form of video calling to follow on many handsets in the future now that Apple have backed it. Anybody used to the format from recent years should forget everything they know, for the similarities start and end at the fact that you can see who you are talking too. Despite needing 2 users with an iPhone 4 and a WiFi connection, the fact that WLAn is used via an internet connection rather than a cell phone network means images are not shaky and crystal clear on the retina display, audio is also superb and such calls are free of charge as they are using an internet/broadband connection. If you are due an upgrade or fancy a change, then you need not look any further than this superb handset which has set the benchmark for the likes of HTC and Samsung to follow.
