There is no doubt that search engines have played a key role in shaping the internet

In its early stages the comprised of only directories arranged categorically and barely there was any internal search function available. But with the advent of technology it changed and basic search was introduced which later on transformed into full fledged search engines. Initially there were meta-crawlers who use to scan only the meta information of website and then provide the information to the user which afterwards changed to crawlers which indexed the entire webpage and uses an algorithm while rendering results to the end user.

Till date search engines have evolved so immensely than any other thing on the internet. Besides it"s a multi-billion dollar industry too and has maximum market cap over internet economy. So again the search engines are disputed leaders of world wide web and they are here to grow further so we can expect another wave of innovations, that can be seen via voice search i.e. you can talk to search engines and they produce the results precisely. Now its still under development with some beta release but it will sooner going to happen that we have artificial intelligence on the websites and user can transact in a millisecond rather than spending lots of time. Ultimately the web will become much smaller as its happening since its inception.
