The Origin And Rules Of The Most Popular Team Sports In Britain
Whether you are a child or an adult getting involved in sport can and will have a positive effect on your life
. Sports are part of our lives in the UK from an early age through the school system. Some of the world's most famous sports began in Britain, including football, cricket, lawn tennis, golf and rugby. These sports are still played regularly in our schools today.
Many people believe football is our national sport, but the real national sport is actually cricket. Cricket is played from April through to August on village greens though out the country. Marylebone Cricket Club, based at Lords cricket ground in London.
Cricket is game made up of eleven players on each side, two batters stand in front of the wickets which are set about 20 feet apart. Each wicket consists of three wooden rods also known as stumps, pushed in to the ground with two smaller bits of wood known as bails, balanced on top.
The bowler from the opposing team throws the ball towards the batter with the aim to knock the bails off the top of the stumps. Incidentally the ball a little smaller than a baseball.
The batters job is to try stop this from happening by hitting the ball with a paddle shaped bat. If the ball travels far enough then the two batters run back and forth between the wickets while the fielders on the opposite team try to catch or retrieve the ball. The game is scored by counting the number of times, also known as runs, that the batters exchange places.
Although cricket is technically our nations favourite sport, if you ask the average person on the street, football will be invariably be their response. Football is highly televised, and incredibly popular in the UK. There are a number of England's football teams are famous throughout the world. The most famous being Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Football origins can be traced back historically to a game known as mob football, which basically involved a mob of people trying to manoeuvre an inflated pigs bladder by any means possible from one end of a field to the other.
The lack of rules and its chaotic nature seems to be the starts of the game we now know today. This rough game was valued for the exercise it gave the competitor, so this game or a very subdued and more controlled version came to be played in English public Schools.
The Football Association was created and set the first official rules in England in 1863. A football team is made up of two teams of eleven players. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with his hands during play. The field players are to kick the ball to the opposite end of the field to their teams goalkeeper in the aim to score a goal in the opponents net. The team that has scored the most goals at the end of the game wins.
The game of rugby is a variation on the original game of football which is followed by thousands throughout the world today. The origins of rugby are accredited to William Webb-Ellis, who during a game of football is said to have picked up the ball and ran with it. Back in the day this would have been seen as unacceptable but for some reason this was accepted and a very early version of the game of rugby was born.
A rugby team consists of 15 players on each side, with up to 7 substitutes allowed. A game is made up of two forty minute halves. The object of rugby, like most games is to beat the opposition by scoring more points. In rugby you do this mainly by scoring tries. You are awarded five points for each try awarded. You score a try when you ground the ball in the in goal area of the opposition. The goal area is marked out at each end behind the goal posts. In rugby you can also win points by kicking the elongated ball at the goals, over the crossbar. These are very losing and brief explanation of the game as this is a game of complex rules and regulations.
Other key sports which are played in schools today are tennis, netball, and basketball along with many others. The main purpose of these games in schools is to get people moving. Obesity is becoming more and more of a problem in UK second only to America, and this is placing a massive stress on the National Health Service.
One of the key ways to combat this is to educate our youth in to setting good examples and habits for the rest of their lives. Doing exercise gives you energy and can help raise you self-worth. Exercise produces endorphins which make you feel good, therefore hopefully encouraging the youth of today to have a better and more positive outlook on life.
Doing exercise can have good physiological effects on your confidence though meeting and socialising with others and the positive effects being part of a team has. Exercise is an excellent release of frustrations and stress for whoever you are, and can help combat the boredom that has forced young people to hang around the streets, and has become a part of our modern society for our youth.
