The Origin Of The Moccasin
Moccasins are soft shoes made of deerskin, moose hide
, and sometimes leather. The origin of the moccasin is through the Native American Indians.
Indians have been using them for centuries in some tribes. Some of these natives wore hard soled and some wore soft, depending on the area these people occupied.
For example, the plains Indians often wore hard soled moccasins because they were surrounded by rocks, cacti and other things that may have damaged their feet. On the other hand, the Indians from the eastern United States, where the ground was covered with softer materials, such as grass, leaves, and dirt wore soft soled moccasins.
Native American Indian moccasins were often adorned with intricate beading patterns that in some cases told a story or depicted a scene. When new settlers arrived in America, the moccasins spread to hunters, traders, and eventually the new European settlers.
The word moccasin is actually derived from a number of languages and has been changed many times throughout history. To explain all of these origins and languages would be confusing. The most easily described origin would be through the Proto-Algonquian word maxkenesi; meaning shoe.
Originally they were hand-made; but it is a little harder to find genuine Native American Indian hand-made moccasins today. However, as they become more popular and fashionable it may become easier.
Traditionally moccasins were used only for protection of the feet, and if they were more fancy and intricate, they might have been used for special celebrations.
Today, Native American tribes, especially in the United States, use them mostly for their powwow clothing and less for their original use.
However, in New Zealand and Australia they are worn by sheep shearers for foot protection, although their reasons are slightly different from the American Indians'.
These sheep shearer's moccasins are made slightly different. They are made from an off white, synthetic felt with the seam up the back of the shoe instead of the front.
They gather at the toe, and lace up the front, which is then covered with a flap that buckles to help ensure that the shearing comb does not get caught in the laces.
In addition to being made a little differently, these moccasins also protect their feet in general; they easily grip wooden floors, and absorb sweat.
Today, they have regained popularity and come in a variety of styles and are used by both males and females as a smart and effective way to keep your feet warm and dry while still being stylish.
