: A lot has been written about disability, and probably a lot more will be written.
Some has been written by the disabled people themselves or by their relatives.
However, there is little information apart from research by doctors, scientists educationists,
and social groups looking for causes and cures.
Until quite recently disabled people were socially isolated. Whether their
condition was physical, emotional or mental, all faced the same social attitudes.
Whether carrying a walking-stick, using a wheelchair, all were viewed as being
somewhat limited mentally.
However, thanks to the scientists, doctors and dedicated educationists, and
even Television and special repoprts social attitudes are gradually changing.
Hidden abilities of the disabled have been recognized, thus making their lives
a little more comfortable.
Regarding present day attitudes are hardly one hundred per cent.
There have and probably always will be some who cannot come to terms
with the imperfection and dysfunctionality human body and will shy
away or ignore the disabled altogether. The reason for these attitudes
lies within the individuals themselves.
The remedy for change is up to society and to some extent the disabled themselves.
Terminology has changed. For example: someone using a wheelchair, carrying a walking
stick, walking with a frame are physically challenged,' while those with
emotional or mental disorders are intellectually challenged.'
These changes in terms has contributed to more accepting attitudes.
It is now recognized that many disabled people have capabilities and talents,
and the same needs, wants and feelings as everybody else. Informative sources
such as TV, the Internet, books, magazines have lessened the separation between
the disabled and society.
Via the media contests and reports the disabled can show their talents and abilities.
The fact that they can actually be seen puts them on a similar level to their able bodied
counterparts. Disability should no longer mean a separation from everyday life.
The most important agenda is now dependant on scientific research to find
preventative causes, cures and prevention of physical conditions such as
Cerebral palsy, Downe's Syndrome, blindness, etc. and the emotional/mental
disorders such as Bipolar, Depression and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Only time will tell how many disabilities can be prevented or cured.
For families, however loving and patient it is hoped that much suffering
and stress can be entirely alleviated.
