The Plastics Injection Molding Process In Detail

An overview

An overview

Plastics are present in a myriad of different things that form an integral part of our daily life. For instance, the casings and covers for different types of electronic items are made from plastics. Most plastic objects that we see today result from a process known as plastics injection molding. This process is widely used to manufacture plastic components of all sizesright from miniature components to components that weigh several tons.

The plastic injection molding method defined

This process is carried out using a special machine which is known as an injection molding machine. The process first begins with the product or component being designed by an engineer. The design is then approved by. Once the design has been approved a toolmaker creates the molds for the desired product. A single mold or a series of molds serve as the base for hundreds or even thousands of components that need to be created using the injection molding method.

The mold is usually made from metal so as to lend unmatched strength to and durability to the mold. Steel and aluminum are the metals of choice for this purpose. It is vital that the mold is created according to exacting specifications. The smallest error in creating the mold could affect the entire product line. This is especially true when important parts such as body panels of automobiles or aircrafts have to be created.

Once the mold has been created, the full-fledged production run is ready to begin. Plastic granules are fed through a hopper on the machine, and they melt inside a special heated container. This molten plastic is then pushed into the mold cavity using a screw-type plunger. As the plastic enters the mold, it takes on the shape of the mold. Sometimes, more pressure is applied in order to ensure that there are no air pockets or uneven contours on the component.

Finally, the plastic is allowed to cool down and then the mold platens are separated in order to retrieve the plastic product or part. The plastics injection molding process can be carried out on several components simultaneously.

Benefits of the plastics injection molding process

When hundreds of plastic parts are required in a short turnaround time, this method is preferred. High-quality parts can be rapidly produced using this method. Most firms prefer not to invest in plastics injection molding machinery. Instead, they outsource this task to a contract manufacturing firm for a fixed amount.

Contract manufacturing firms also carry out ancillary tasks such as PCB assembly. Printed circuit board assembly (PCB assembly) is the process of assembling various components and circuits on a printed circuit board. Furthermore, such firms can also be contacted for procuring cable assemblies. Wire harnesses and cable assemblies are an indispensible part of the electronics manufacturing process.
