The evolving society demands students and teachers involved in the education sector to go beyond textbooks in order to spread effective learning

. In the age of technology, learning through internet is essential in all levels of education. This is the reason why students are becoming increasingly dependent upon their desktops or laptops and mobile devices for studies. However, it is not possible to carry a desktop or laptop around in every place one visits; portability of a mobile device is one of the chief reasons why both education institutes & students are opting to deploy mobile apps in the education sector.

Essential components required to impart education everyday, for instance calculators, textbooks, pens, notebooks, etc., have been replaced with mobile apps. If a student reads up textbooks from their mobile devices and shares documents or notes from Google while also writing out lecture observations directly to knowledge portals, the spread of educational information is fast and the education features also become available & accessible to a larger number of students. This combination of smartphone penetration in every layer of society, growth in the use of mobile apps, and the concept of digitization has indeed affected the education sector to a large extent. While the eLearning model had already existed, the increased use of technology has been successful in exploiting an accretive revenue stream in education. The demand of the new generation is functionality, flexibility, and anywhere anytime availability of education material; only mobile apps can ensure the fulfillment of such demands and hence their increased usage.

The practice of deployment of mobile apps is now not limited to merely individual student groups and learning institutions. Publishers of education & information material are also creating their own mobile apps to reach out to an increasingly number of people and assist them to study while on the go. Moreover, the functions of mobile apps used in the education sector are not limited to spread of study materials alone. Any useful campus information, such as admission details, notices & announcements regarding events inside the campus, examination results & dates, and information related to students code of conduct within the campus are disseminated through the mobile applications deployed by the education sector.

Mobile apps allow both students & their teachers to store academic information in their mobile devices so that virtual libraries are created. The interactive features incorporated in the mobile apps enable faster & easier learning. More than 300,000 apps being sold at the Apple App Store alone focuses on the education sector, apart from hundreds of other apps focusing on educational gaming. In fact, the clinical & legal industries too are deploying the mobile education apps to facilitate training programs. A survey result released towards the beginning of this year revealed that more than 50 percent students currently pursuing higher studies (especially studies abroad) use their mobile devices to view the college or university websites. However, an alarming revelation is that close to 35 percent of higher education institutes across the world still do not have websites which are optimized for mobile browsing.

The survey also pointed out the fact that the use of mobile apps in the education sector will completely eclipse the importance of desktops & laptops in this sector by the end of years 2014. Since mobile education apps are benefitting students, professors, and also developers, a surge in the development of such apps is projected in the future.
