Saab have been producing the 9-3 since 1998, it is a compact executive car very popular for business and fleet use. The Vauxhall Vectra and Saab 9-3 share the same platform and are built in Sweden, the 9-3 is Saab's entry level model.
Saab intend to hold onto their market share of the fleet sector by cleaning up their diesel engines on the 9-3, the new diesel 9-3 has a class leading CO2 emissions level of 119g/km which is 10% less than the current used Saab 9-3 in Abergele. The plan is to make the 9-3 the perfect choice for company car users and a cost-effective option for customers keen to reduce fuel consumption and their carbon footprint.
For the 2011 model all the 9-3 diesel engines will have a more advanced twin turbo set up, giving a impressive combined MPG figure of 62.8. By adding twin turbochargers across the diesel range, the engineers have optimised the engines to deliver more power and torque in the interests of fuel consumption and lower emissions.
Saab engineers were charged with reducing CO2 and Fuel consumption by 12% in 18 months, with the twin turbo modifications and advance engine remapping they were able to achieve this, other efficiency modifications include;
Recalibrated engine management with improved fuel injection and combustion control
Revised gear ratios to match new power and torque characteristics
Improved electrical power management, including sophisticated alternator control when battery charging is not required and more efficient electro-hydraulic power steering assistance
Low rolling resistance tires for reduced road friction
Improved aerodynamics, with rear under body deflector blades
Reduced weight through lighter construction and sound-deadening materials
Revised torque converter for automatic transmission with optimised shift programming.
Saab also reduced CO2 levels and fuel consumption in their petrol line up; all petrol Saab 9-3's produce 7% less CO2 and have increased MPG figures.
