The Science Behind Laser Hair Removal
Many people have heard of laser hair removal but are wary of using it
, often because they think its going to be difficult. However, hair removal with a laser is actually a straightforward process that leaves your skin smooth and hair-free, usually within eight treatments.
So, whats the science behind it? Unlike shaving, which removes the outer hair but leaves the follicle intact, or waxing, which pulls the hair out at the root only for it to grow back again, laser hair removal works to disable the hair follicle.
The hair follicle is what normally makes your hair grow; the follicles work in growth cycles, which is the reason why it takes a while for hair to grow back if you get your legs waxed, for instance. Laser hair removal systems work by targeting the dark pigment (the melanin) in your hair.
The melanin in the hair absorbs the light from the laser which is converted into heat. This heat works directly on the hair follicle and by disrupting it, permanently deactivates the growth cells in the follicle, therefore preventing new hair from growing back. Eventually, the hair will fall out and it wont grow back. As not all of your hair follicles produce growth at the same time, it normally takes a course of treatments to target all of the follicles to stop your hair growing back.
Generally, youll use one laser treatment every other week over the course of three months to get the process underway. Then, to ensure you get the best possible results, youll need one treatment a month for the next few months. At the end of it all, the home laser hair removal treatment should leave your treated skin hair free for good.
Previously, this type of treatment was only available through clinics and salons, but developments in technology mean that you can now make use of it at home, too, making laser hair removal. All you need to do is invest in a home laser removal device. When you compare the temporary and not always ideal - results of shaving or waxing with the permanence of home laser hair removal, you can see why it may be an attractive alternative method for many women.
