In the job seminar I teach, I always ask the same question... What do you really want to do?Their response always surprises me. A lot of people say they want to start their own business, but very few really know what kind of business they would start.
New business ventures can be risky. How can you increase your odds of success.
Most people fall into three categories of skills:
Creative Labor & Craft Service & Social
Some people fall into all three categories. You probably already know which ones you have. If you have creative skills, you probably have the following traits:
Like to repair things Are good with your hands Like to take things apart
If you have service and social skills you probably:
Like helping others Like meeting new people Are good at talking to strangers Are empathetic to the needs of others
Once youve figured out which category or categories you fit into, now you need to start digging deeper into each one. Start by looking at the skills you have on your resume. What were your job responsibilities and how did you achieve your goals? Here are some examples: People Management:
Holding people accountable Rewarding achievement Encouraging others
Technical Skills:
Making and producing things Hand to eye coordination Growing things Operating equipment Working on computers Working with precision tools
Entertaining or Inspiring Others:
Advising or empowering others Communicating clearly Negotiating with others Building and maintaining relationships
Working with Information:
Writing business plans Writing grant proposals Evaluating risk management plans Keeping and managing records Breaking down and analyzing information
Take the skills you already have and put them together with the things that you enjoy doing to create the businesses that you are passionate about that will also bring you prosperity. Creating a business that you enjoy will seem less like work. And one where you use your best skills will make it more likely to succeed.
