The Slow, The Fast And The Gigabit Ethernet

Surfing the internet is a fun thing, many people will be on their computers a majority of their days

. With the advances experienced in the connections we use to surf the net it's gotten much faster than when it first came around.

Advancing from slow speeds that took several minutes for a full page to come up. To the Ethernet first coming on at a speed of 10 megabits. But it got even better in a few years as that was increased up to 100 megabits per second. However, it's now up to a Gigabit Ethernet which is a full Gigabit per second. This speed is amazing.

Though this Gigabit Ethernet is used by businesses mostly, the technology has only begun to be placed into personal computer as of April 2009. It's a difficult thing because other parts of the computer have a hard time running at that speed. So it's mostly a business used technology at present.

There are different physical layers of this Gigabit Ethernet, which go from copper cable, to optical fiber, and twisted cable. All of which have advantages over the other.

While the copper cable will usually only reach a distance of 25 meters. Some of the single mode fiber will reach all the way up to 10 km. Depending on the type of wavelength that is used, and the layer of Gigabit Ethernet there are many different meters and lengths that can be reached.

It will be excellent once the personal computer that a consumer can buy will be able to use this technology. The speed will seem absolutely amazing to many. Many people may never even wonder about using a speed this fast. Some will be satisfied with a slower speed that is so much higher than the past speeds.

At present some people are able to connect up several hundred megabits per second, but that's way under a Gigabit Ethernet. However, you will need to remember that most drives and other parts of your computer will find a very difficult time to keep up with even the several hundred megabits let alone the Gigabit. If you are hoping to eventually use the Gigabit Ethernet the time may not be that far off, but remember that this connection like any Ethernet must be done correctly for it to work right. Keep your fingers crossed the technology in our personal computers is sure to catch up quickly enough.
