The Splendour Of War Horse On Dartmoor

Steven Spielbergs 2011 epic war film War Horse was nominated for six academy awards this year

, including the best picture. Based on the novel by British author Michael Morpurgo, the story is set before and during World War I. It is a moving and inspirational adventure of a horse named Joey and a young man named Albert. Joey and Albert are forcefully separated and the story follows the powerful and touching journey of Joey through the battlefields, changing and touching the lives of those he meets. The emotional tale describes the timeless beauty of friendship, love, hope and destiny. War Horse was filmed on the sweeping landscapes of Dartmoor, which is at the doorstep of the Devon based author of the novel.

From Arthur Conan Doyles Hound of the Baskervilles to the murder mysteries of Agatha Christie, Dartmoor has been the backdrop for several major literary inspirations. Steven Spielberg himself was so profoundly mesmerised by filming War Horse on Dartmoor he goes on to say, I have never before, in my long and eclectic career, been gifted with such an abundance of natural beauty as I experienced filming War Horse on Dartmoor And, with two-and-a-half weeks of extensive coverage of landscapes and skies, I hardly scratched the surface of the visual opportunities that were offered to me. The moors, tors and the spectacle of natural scenery gave everything the film required to make it a visual success. Castle Combe in Wiltshire was used to shoot the main village scenes of the story.

Dartmoor became the third character for the film with its living breathing stunning self that gave life to 1914 Britain. The original story begins in the parish of Iddesleigh but Dartmoor certainly provided the endless skies, craggy hilltops, looming tors and indescribable sunsets for the film. Warhorse on Dartmoor was picture perfect and the great British countryside in and around is Devons best and southwests most dramatic landscape. Dartmoor is famous for its mysterious, wild and magnificent moods that take your breath away. Climbing one of the tors will give you visual access to the vast landscape and the views are worth the climb. Dartmoor has its very own horses who roam freely, who will constantly remind anyone of War Horse on Dartmoor.
