I have researched or studied a flag or two in my life and from all the flags I have seen attached to steel flagpoles, the flag of New Mexico is definitely one of my absolute favorites. The colors are unique and can be very much identified with the state's history. The flag shows the colors red and yellow, a red sun and yellow flag-field.

Interestingly, these beautiful bold flag-colors symbolize or represent a person called Isabella of Castille and some of her near associates. Similar or the same colors are used on the national Spanish flag, flown from small and tall flagpoles across the other side of the world. The NM flag is relatively young in comparison to other historical flags of the United States.

The state of New Mexico is located in the southwestern area of the United States of America. This state is also included in the so called "mountain states." This area is considered to be one of the sparsely inhabited areas of the Nation. Interestingly, this territory was home to Native Americans in the past, as well as those that belonged to New Spain.

When New Mexico was officially considered a state, the state flag had yet to be invented. During the so called "world fair" at St. Louis, back in '15, a different flag was representing the state and looked very much opposite to what the state flies today. The representing flag at that time, or for that event, was colored blue and showed the U.S. flag in the upper left side. The state's name was also shown and colored in silver.

The so called "Cross of Burgundy" flag was used by Spain during the early years of the 1600-s and flown from flag poles of all kinds as a naval ensign. It was used up the fourth decade of the 19th century as the land battle flag.

Unlike other state and territorial historical flags in the United States, the NM state flag is considered the best designed flag by NAVA. Actually, a poll or survey held by NAVA concluded that it was the best designed flag, comparing its design to dozens of others. Today, the flag is available for purchase throughout the U.S. and is flown from commercial and residential flag poles everywhere.
