Home automation has come a long way from the days of the Radio Shack X-10 controllers
. Home Automation today is about seamless integration of all the systems that make up a home.
Most people are tired of the enormous array of electronic gadgets on the market today that require ten remote controls to run them. They are also tired of the hours needed to learn and master the new electronic device they just bought. How many electronic devices are underutilized or never used because of a lack of understanding of how to operate it? How many people never use all the functions of their TV or DVD player because it is just too complicated to understand or use?
Home Automation systems today are all about a single-button control or sensor-controlled system. No one wants to deal with twenty remotes or a lot of complex manuals; they want an integrated home automation system that can be controlled by a single device like a touch pad or their iPhone! How about something that can be preprogrammed to turn on the HVAC and cool the house down to a nice temperature on your way home from work?
A home automation system scenario would look something like this: The homeowner comes home from work, walks to the home automation touch pad and presses a single preset or press a button on single remote. The system then sets all the lights in the house to a preprogrammed level, closes the window coverings, turns the HVAC system on, and turns on the audio/video/Internet system.
A home automation system is capable of adjusting the environmental controls that operate the solar panels, turn on the Jacuzzi or start the pool cleaning cycle as defined by preprogrammed operations. Most operations of this nature are time, day and event driven and are run automatically by the home automation system.
This type of application of a Home automation system is not farfetched, and has been installed in many upper class homes over the past few years. What has changed is that the cost of these home automation systems has dropped to a point that the use of a home automation system is less expensive than what they are used to protect in the home.
